Playing college soccer is a dream for a lot of young athletes. They spend countless hours studying to get good grades and score high on the ACTs and SATs, evenings and weekends training and playing, all for the hope of one day getting the chance to put on a University jersey. There are countless blogs and videos that go in-depth into the recruiting side of things (and this is something we will also go into more at a later day), but it seems like no one really prepares you for what to expect once you are there.

Our goal with this series is to help give insight and perspective to current and future college athletes. Here, they can hear from former athletes who were once in their shoes, and hopefully, they can learn from their experiences.

In our interview with Katelyn Partridge (@nutritionwithkp), Nutrition & Lifestyle Coach, certified CrossFit coach, and former college soccer player, we asked her what advice she would give to her college-aged self.

“I actually did a poll on my Instagram, asking my followers what they would tell their college athlete self, and the answers I got were great. Some of them were hilarious. Here are some:

  • Play for you, don’t play for anyone else

  • Train more in the off-season

  • Do the summer fitness

  • Drink less alcohol

Personally, when I think about this question, I wish that I would have just spent more time trying to always be just 1% better. No matter what it was, as long as it pertained to my athletic career, I wish I would have always tried to be just 1% better. In every training session I went into, I wish I would have tried a little bit harder. I was very lucky and fortunate, I was a good athlete, and I was a really good soccer player, so there were days when I just went through the motions. I think eventually it caught up to me, and kinda bit me in my butt a little bit. I wish I would have always tried just a little bit harder.

But going back to training in the off-season, I also wish I would have done that a little more as well.”
